Stopping for chai was to become a daily habit. One receives a small glass of sweet tea – sometimes spiced, sometimes not. The tea is already sweetened while being brewed in a large saucepan at the chai stand – we had to quickly request that no extra sugar be added, which would often raise an eyebrow.
These ragged children approached us as we waited on the benches for our brew. A round of tea and bread was bought for them. I was surprised to see them squatting politely and patiently wtih their breadsticks, not taking a single bite until their tea had arrived, whereupon they dunked the bread.
Begging children were the hardest to bear.
